Animated by the core MGM team of Ed Barge, Kenneth Muse, Ray Patterson, and Irven Spence, it was filmed in Technicolor with a standard 1.37:1 Academy aspect ratio.
The narrative centers on Spike’s fierce paternal protectiveness. While Spike is trying to get Tyke to nap, Tom and Jerry's usual chase disrupts their peace. After Tom accidentally wakes Tyke, Spike delivers a stern ultimatum: if Tom bothers the pup again, Spike will "tear him apart". Recognizing this new layer of protection, Jerry spends the rest of the short using Tyke as a literal shield, forcing Tom to employ increasingly absurd and underhanded tactics to lure the mouse away without alerting the doting father. The short concludes with Tom's defeat, forced to stand guard outside the fence while Jerry sleeps soundly next to the bulldogs.
