The movie takes place in 2032, where the world has become a seemingly perfect place. Crime has been eradicated, and people live in a clean, efficient, and highly controlled society. The story revolves around John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone), a tough and skilled cop who is cryogenically frozen for 36 years after being deemed too brutal for his methods. When Spartan is thawed out, he finds himself in a world that is both familiar and alien.
Spartan is forced to team up with a younger, more modern cop named Lenny Hightower (Wesley Snipes) to catch a notorious criminal, Edgar Friendly (Denis Leary), who has escaped from a maximum-security prison. Along the way, Spartan must adapt to the new world and confront his own outdated values and methods.
