Dav Pilkey conceived the character of Captain Underpants when he was in the second grade. Pilkey, who was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia as a child, often spent his time in the school hallway due to classroom disruptions. Despite early discouragement from teachers, Pilkey's personal experiences with learning differences eventually became a "superpower" that helped him write stories that resonated with reluctant readers.
