Elias froze halfway to the ventilation shaft. "What do you mean?"

The man sighed and tapped the air. The vault walls dissolved into a sterile, white laboratory. Elias looked down; he wasn't wearing his tactical gear. He was in a hospital gown, wires snaking from his temples to a massive, humming machine labeled .

"Wait," Sarah said, her voice dropping an octave. "Something’s wrong. The sensors... they aren't coming back on." 7 : What a Twist!

The back wall of the vault—solid reinforced steel—didn't explode. It melted. A figure stepped through the shimmering metal as if it were water. It wasn't a rival thief. It wasn't the police. It was a man in a lab coat, holding a clipboard, looking remarkably bored.

"I’m out," Elias whispered, tucking the gem into a velvet-lined pocket. Elias froze halfway to the ventilation shaft

"The power grid for the whole block just flatlined. Someone else is here, Elias. Someone bigger."

The doctor handed Elias a manila envelope containing his 'release papers' and a set of car keys. Elias walked out of the facility, squinting at the harsh, real-world sunlight. He got into the sleek black sedan waiting for him and drove. Elias looked down; he wasn't wearing his tactical gear

"What twist were you expecting, Elias?" the doctor’s voice distorted, becoming a chorus of a thousand digital screams. "That you were the hero? No. You're the battery."
